Comments come after Republicans abandon negotiated effort to fix the border now
WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator John Hickenlooper released the following statement after Republicans rejected the National Security Supplemental that included a border security bill they themselves demanded and negotiated:
“Republicans are all hat, no cattle on border security. For months they demanded we do something on the border. For months we negotiated with them to get one.
“But when it came time to actually vote and pass their bill, they chose to sacrifice the border to win an election nine months away. They believe it’s better to campaign on the border crisis than to actually fix it.
“I can only speak for myself, but I came here to work, not to permanently campaign.”
Senator Hickenlooper supports comprehensive immigration reform including a legal pathway for DREAMers, TPS recipients, and essential workers. Hickenlooper has advocated for additional federal support for cities like Denver who have borne the brunt of expenses for taking in migrant families, for cutting red tape to ensure skilled laborers and H2-B visa workers can fill workforce gaps, and phasing out outdated visa caps.
