Everyone American deserves affordable health care

Senator Hickenlooper believes that health care is a right, not a privilege. No matter where you live, who you are, or how much you earn, every American should be guaranteed access to high-quality, affordable, and universal health care.

Instead, the Trump administration has empowered a system that puts profit ahead of people. President Trump’s signature legislation, the so-called “One Big Beautiful Bill,” created a health care crisis – slashing more than $1 trillion from Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act to pay for tax breaks for the wealthiest Americans and large corporations. The consequences are stark: health care costs have doubled for millions of families and an estimated 15 million Americans – including 241,000 Coloradans – stand to lose their coverage. Rural health care is in the crosshairs — with more than 300 rural hospitals at risk of closing or slashing critical services like ERs and maternity care.

Senator Hickenlooper is focused on reversing that damage and bringing costs down for Americans. He fought to repeal the $1 trillion in health care cuts and extend the Affordable Care Act’s enhanced premium tax credits so working families can afford coverage. He also organized a public pressure campaign alongside Coloradans to demand accountability from Washington.

As a member of the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee, he has worked to increase transparency and competition in the health care system. He led legislation to codify and expand health care price transparency and supported critical amendments to preserve Medicaid expansion, block harmful Medicaid work requirements, and protect prescription drug negotiation provisions secured through the Inflation Reduction Act, legislation he was instrumental in getting signed into law.

Building upon this progress, Senator Hickenlooper knows we must do more to lower the cost of prescription drugs in this country. He’s led multiple pieces of legislation focused on increasing generic competition, reducing drug manufacturer patent abuses, and cracking down on third-party middlemen that are driving up costs.

He also recognizes that reproductive health care is essential care. Senator Hickenlooper believes that women’s health care decisions should be between her and her doctor, not politicians. That’s why he co-sponsors the Women’s Health Protection Act to enshrine Roe v. Wade into federal law. Hickenlooper is also a strong champion of fertility and family planning services. IVF helped him and his wife grow their own family, and he believes every family deserves that same opportunity. He cosponsors the Right to IVF Act, which would establish a national right to in vitro fertilization (IVF) services, as well as the Expanding Access to Family Planning Act to protect and expand access to reproductive health care – including birth control and cancer screenings

At a time when families are suffering from rising costs and uncertainty, Senator Hickenlooper is committed to building a health care system that puts people first and holds large insurance and pharmaceutical companies accountable – so every American can get the care they need, when they need it.
