WASHINGTON – Today, U.S. Senators John Hickenlooper and Jon Ossoff, along with nine of their Senate colleagues, reintroduced the Right to Vote Act to protect American citizens’ fundamental right to vote. The bill would allow Americans to enforce their right to vote by challenging any law that unduly restricts ballot access in court.
“Americans’ right to vote is under attack, and this president is determined to undermine our free and fair elections to keep his power,” said Hickenlooper. “We’re giving Americans the tools to defend a right the Constitution guarantees.”
“With voting rights under attack in Georgia and across the country, I am reintroducing my legislation to empower voters to challenge in court any action taken by a state or local government that makes it harder to vote, and force that state or that locality to demonstrate that the restrictions serve some governmental purpose and are the least restrictive means of doing so,” said Ossoff.
Hickenlooper has consistently fought voter suppression efforts by Trump and MAGA Republicans. He’s stood up to their attacks on mail-in-voting, a proven safe and secure voting method. He cosponsors several pieces of voting rights legislation, including the For the People Act, the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, and the Freedom to Vote Act. As governor, Hickenlooper created the gold-standard mail-in-voting system, providing millions of Coloradans with easier access to the ballot box.
