Hickenlooper: “Colorado Has a Fully Operational Command. Huntsville Has an Empty Lot.”

Sep 4, 2025

WASHINGTON –  Today, U.S. Senator John Hickenlooper released the following statement after President Trump formally announced on Tuesday his intent to move the headquarters of the U.S. Space Command from Colorado Springs to Huntsville, Alabama:

“Moving Space Command from Colorado to Alabama isn’t about military readiness — it’s about punishing Colorado. Trump said so on national television.

“Colorado already has a fully operational command, where military experts are defending the U.S. against threats in space every day. Huntsville has an empty lot.

“Rebuilding this infrastructure from scratch will waste billions in taxpayer dollars, dissolve an expert workforce, and above all: threaten our national security. The president would rather act like China and Russia are our friends.

“I’ll be fighting for Space Command to stay in Colorado, where it belongs.”

After two separate basing processes, two investigations, and a rigorous review by the Department of Defense, the U.S. Air Force announced in 2023 that the U.S. Space Command would be permanently based at Peterson Space Force Base in Colorado Springs. The command has been at Full Operational Capability for nearly two years.

After President Trump’s announcement on Tuesday, Hickenlooper joined a statement with the entire Colorado congressional delegation rebuking the administration’s decision. Hickenlooper also released a video on his social media platforms slamming Trump’s political decision and detailing how the move will weaken our national security at a terrible time.
