This week, Democrats will force another two votes to end Trump’s reckless trade war
WASHINGTON – Last night, U.S. Senator John Hickenlooper voted to end President Trump’s reckless 50% tariffs on Brazil. The resolution, which will terminate the emergency declaration the White House has used to try to justify their illegal tariffs, passed with all the Senate Democrats and five Senate Republicans voting for it. The House of Representatives passed a rule this year to cede tariff authority to Trump and must overturn that provision to take back congressional power.
“Trump’s tariff-taxes are illegal. They cripple small businesses and make it more expensive for parents to feed their families.
“We voted to end these senseless taxes. Now, the House of Representatives needs to come back from their paid vacation and help us lower prices for working families.”
As a former small business owner, Hickenlooper has been a vocal opponent of the Trump administration’s trade war and the harm it is causing Colorado businesses. He recently introduced the Small Business RELIEF Act to exempt small businesses from the admin’s tariffs and give them refunds for the tariffs they have already paid.
This summer, he also chaired a field hearing of the Senate Small Business and Entrepreneurship Committee in Denver to highlight the strain the outdoor recreation industry is facing under the Trump administration’s chaotic tariffs. Hickenlooper previously called on Small Business Administrator Kelly Loeffler to address the impacts of the Trump administration’s tariffs on small businesses and sent a letter to the Trump administration demanding answers on the national security and economic impacts of their tariffs on Canadian goods.
