Hickenlooper, Bennet, Colleagues Introduce Bill to Cut Taxes for Working Americans

Legislation expands earned income tax credit to people without children

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator John Hickenlooper, Michael Bennet, and 43 Senate colleagues introduced the Tax Cut for Workers Act to give millions of working Americans a tax break.

“Working Americans deserve tax cuts,” said Hickenlooper. “Making sure the people building our economy – not just the folks at the top – keep more of what they earn will rebuild the middle class and help working Coloradans thrive.”

“Working people need relief more than ever. The Trump Administration’s reckless tariff policy will cost the average American family upwards of $3,800 annually,” said Bennet. “These tariffs, coupled with an extension of Trump’s tax cuts for his billionaire friends, are an insult to hard working Americans. Senator Cortez Masto and I are committed to passing real tax relief for middle-class families through the Child Tax Credit and the Earned Income Tax Credit.”

For decades the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) has delivered tax relief for millions of workers. However, working class Americans without children currently receive a much smaller EITC than workers with children. The expansion would nearly triple the average tax break for working class Americans and extend eligibility for the tax cut to workers under the age of 25 and over the age of 64.
