Hickenlooper Statement on Iran War Powers Vote

Apr 15, 2026

WASHINGTON – Today, U.S. Senator John Hickenlooper released the following statement after voting in favor of the Iran War Powers Resolution in the Senate:

“This war is a Shakespearean tragedy on a global scale. American lives have been lost. The world economy has been crippled. Worst of all, we’re left with no good options.

“Coloradans are already facing a cost-of-living emergency. We need lower costs for gas, groceries, housing, and health care. Not another endless conflict.

“Congress never authorized this illegal war. Let’s obey the law and end it.”

The Iran War Powers Resolution failed in the Senate, with most Senate Republicans continuing to vote against the resolution. Last month, Hickenlooper voted in favor of a similar War Powers Resolution to prevent the use of military force against Iran unless explicitly authorized by Congress.

Hickenlooper has consistently condemned the administration for sidestepping Congress and dragging America into a war with no clear objective – one that risks American lives, raises costs here at home, and that Americans overwhelmingly oppose. Last week, Hickenlooper released video statements in response to Trump’s unhinged press conference and violent Truth Social posts where he threatened to “destroy a whole civilization.” Last month, Hickenlooper spoke on the Senate floor to denounce Trump’s illegal war in Iran.
